Why didn't my shrooms work with Golden Teacher and Penis Envy mushrooms

Why Didn’t My Shrooms Work? 9 Common Reasons and What Not to Do Next

If your shrooms did not seem to work, do not immediately take more. The effects may be delayed, the amount may be lower than you thought, recent use may have created tolerance, a medication may be affecting the experience, or the product may be weaker than expected. More than one explanation can apply at the same time.

The safest next step during the same session is usually to wait in a calm place, keep the rest of the product put away and avoid adding alcohol, cannabis or another drug. A quiet first hour can still turn into a strong peak later.

Before you decide nothing happened

Check the time, product format, amount per piece, recent food, strain and date of your last mushroom use. If you take prescription medication, do not skip or stop it to make shrooms feel stronger. Medication changes belong with a qualified healthcare professional.

This guide covers the nine most common explanations, what you can check afterward and what not to do next. If the question is mainly about timing, start with how long shrooms take to kick in.

Why did my shrooms not work?

Possible reasonWhat to checkWhat not to do
Delayed onsetTime taken, format and recent foodDo not redose because the first hour feels quiet
Label confusionAmount per piece versus amount per packageDo not guess from package size
ToleranceHow recently and how often you used psilocybinDo not keep increasing amounts on consecutive days
Potency variationSpecies, strain, batch and product ageDo not assume the next batch will also be weak
MedicationPrescription and non-prescription productsDo not stop medication without professional guidance
Product problemSource, seal, label, storage and appearanceDo not compensate by taking an unknown large amount

Use this table after the session as a checklist, not as a reason to experiment while waiting. Effects can be subtle at first and may build while you are trying to diagnose them.

1. You did not wait long enough

Dried mushrooms are often noticeable within 30 to 60 minutes, but that is not a deadline. Edibles, capsules, recent food and individual digestion can make the first clear effects take longer.

The early signs may also be easy to dismiss: yawning, a strange stomach feeling, restlessness, a shift in temperature, brighter colour, more emotional music or a different sense of time. Someone waiting for obvious visuals may say nothing is happening even though the come-up has started.

The danger is adding more just before the original amount becomes active. Both amounts can then develop together and create a peak much stronger than intended. Check the clock, stay where you are and do not drive because you still feel normal.

Check the clock, label and strain before assuming the first amount failed.

2. A recent meal delayed the onset

A large or heavy meal may slow stomach emptying and delay an oral product. It can also make early body sensations harder to distinguish from ordinary fullness, reflux or bloating. That does not mean the food permanently cancelled the psilocybin.

An empty stomach is not a guaranteed solution. Some people feel hungry, shaky or more anxious without food, and a faster onset can feel abrupt. The practical middle ground is a modest, familiar meal earlier in the day. The complete guide to what to eat before, during and after shrooms explains the tradeoff.

Do not try to overpower a delayed meal by adding more mushrooms. The original amount may still arrive once digestion moves forward.

3. The amount was lower than you thought

Edible labels can show several numbers: total package content, amount per piece, mushroom equivalent, number of servings or another measurement. The largest number on the front is not always one serving.

For example, a package may contain ten pieces while the displayed amount describes the entire package. Eating one piece does not deliver the package total. The opposite mistake is possible too: someone assumes the number applies to the whole bag when it applies to every piece.

Read the serving panel before opening the product. Multiply the amount per piece by the number of pieces only when the label supports that calculation. The shroom edible label guide walks through the exact process.

With dried mushrooms, visual size is just as unreliable. One large cap is not automatically one gram. Use a digital scale. Post #5 compares what 1 gram, 2 grams and 3.5 grams may feel like without pretending weight guarantees potency.

4. Recent use created tolerance

Psilocybin tolerance can develop quickly. Using mushrooms again soon after a previous experience may produce noticeably weaker effects, even when the product and measured amount look the same. Health Canada notes that tolerance may develop over several days of continued use.

That can create a bad cycle: take more because the second session felt weak, take even more the next day, then assume a very large amount is normal. Once tolerance fades, repeating that amount can be far stronger than expected.

Do not use a disappointing session as a same-week dose escalation plan. Allow time to return to baseline, consider what else changed and avoid chasing the exact feeling of a previous trip.

Microdosing can also affect expectations and tolerance. If you use a regular protocol, record the days and amounts instead of treating microdoses as irrelevant. Read what microdosing means and compare microdosing with full-dose trips.

5. The strain or batch was less potent

Natural mushrooms do not contain a perfectly standardized amount of psilocybin. Species, strain, genetics, growing conditions, harvest timing, drying, storage and the individual fruiting body can all matter.

A 2026 controlled cultivation study found more than sevenfold variation in total tryptamines across 14 Psilocybe cubensis strains. Individual mushrooms within the same strain also varied. That supports something experienced customers already know: equal dried weight does not always mean equal effect.

Strain choice provides a useful starting point. Golden Teacher is moderate. Penis Envy is commonly much stronger at the same weight. The full Golden Teacher vs Penis Envy comparison explains why the same gram number should not be copied between them.

A weak experience from one bag does not prove the next bag or strain will also be weak. Do not automatically double the amount next time.

6. Heat, moisture or age affected the product

Psilocybin products are not improved by a hot car, a sunny windowsill, an open humid bag or months beside a steamy kitchen. Heat, light, oxygen and moisture can contribute to degradation and can also create quality or contamination problems.

Dried mushrooms should remain dry, sealed and protected from light. Chocolate and gummies should follow their package instructions and should not be stored where children or other adults could mistake them for ordinary food.

Check for a broken seal, condensation, unusual odour, visible mould, insect activity or a dramatic texture change. Do not consume a product that appears contaminated simply because you do not want to waste it. Contact the seller with the order number, product name, photos and storage details.

7. A medication changed the effects

Some prescription medications may reduce, alter or complicate psilocybin effects. The interaction is not simple enough to solve with an online chart.

A 2023 retrospective survey found that people taking SSRIs or SNRIs frequently reported weaker than expected mushroom effects. Another 2024 analysis of online reports found mixed outcomes, including reduced effects for many people, unchanged effects for others and a smaller number of concerning reactions. These studies rely heavily on self-reports and do not prove one predictable result for every medication or person.

Antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, antidepressants and other drugs may have different mechanisms and risks. Lithium deserves particular caution because case reports and interaction reviews have raised serious safety concerns when it is combined with classic psychedelics.

Do not skip, taper or stop a prescribed medication to make mushrooms work. Withdrawal, symptom recurrence and other harms may be more serious than a weak trip. Ask the prescriber or a pharmacist who can review the exact medication, dose, health history and timing.

Do not stop prescription medication to make shrooms feel stronger
Medication interactions are complex. Do not change a prescription without qualified professional guidance.

8. Your expectations were too specific

Not every effective experience includes moving walls, vivid geometry, laughter or a life-changing insight. Lower amounts may show up as a change in body sensation, mood, attention, music, emotional openness or time perception.

Expectations can also be shaped by a friend’s story, a product name or a dramatic social video. If you spend the entire come-up checking whether the room matches someone else’s trip, subtle effects may feel like failure.

Set and setting influence what receives your attention. A noisy party, constant phone use, an argument or the pressure to socialize may make an inward experience hard to notice. A calm setting does not guarantee stronger visuals, but it gives the experience fewer distractions. Read the set and setting guide.

Body size alone does not explain the difference. People of similar size can respond very differently, and a larger person does not automatically need a larger amount.

9. The product was unclear, unreliable or not what you expected

A product without a clear name, ingredient statement, amount, serving information or traceable seller leaves you guessing. Homemade items and anonymous products may be unevenly mixed. A chocolate bar can contain more active material in one section than another if production is inconsistent.

Wild mushrooms add a different and more serious problem: identification. Poisonous species can resemble psilocybin mushrooms, and a photograph is not enough to confirm safety. Never eat a wild mushroom merely to test whether it works.

When buying, look for:

  • a clear product and strain name;
  • an amount per piece and per package where relevant;
  • sealed packaging and storage instructions;
  • a seller with accessible support and real product reviews;
  • consistent photographs and descriptions; and
  • a format you can measure without guessing.

Customers can compare clearly described dried mushroom strains, mushroom gummies, shroom chocolate and capsules in the Magic Mushrooms Dispensary shop. Clear product information reduces guessing, but natural potency can still vary.

What not to do next

Do not take a large second amount during the same session

Delayed onset is one of the main reasons an experience becomes stronger than intended. Put the rest away and make any future decision when fully sober.

Do not double the amount next time

A weak session may reflect tolerance, food, label confusion or an unusually mild specimen. Changing several variables at once prevents you from learning which one mattered.

Do not stop prescription medication

A disappointing psychedelic effect is not a reason to alter treatment. Medication changes require professional guidance.

Do not add cannabis, alcohol or another drug

Mixing substances does not reliably rescue a weak experience. It adds interaction risk, impaired judgment and a less predictable peak. Health Canada warns that combining magic mushrooms with substances such as cannabis, amphetamines or alcohol increases the risk of serious effects.

Do not drive because you feel nothing yet

Effects may begin after you leave. Stay in the planned setting and remain free of responsibilities for the full expected window.

Do not assume stronger is better

Moving from Golden Teacher to Penis Envy or from a light amount to a strong one changes the risk as well as the intensity. Post #5 explains how common dried amounts may differ.

A better way to troubleshoot after the session

  1. Write down the exact product, strain and format.
  2. Record the measured amount or amount per piece.
  3. Note when you took it and when you first noticed anything.
  4. Record what and when you ate.
  5. Note any mushroom or psychedelic use in the previous two weeks.
  6. List medications and supplements, without changing them.
  7. Describe storage conditions and product age.
  8. Save the package and contact customer support if the product seems wrong.

This record is more useful than “it did nothing.” It helps distinguish a timing issue from a product, tolerance or label problem. If you contact Magic Mushrooms Dispensary, include the order number and clear photos so the team can identify the exact item.

For your next purchase, choose the product whose amount and potency you can understand before checkout. New customers can compare the First Timer Kit or start with Golden Teacher rather than selecting the strongest strain to compensate for one disappointing session.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before deciding shrooms did not work?

Do not use one hour as a universal cutoff. Dried mushrooms often begin within 30 to 60 minutes, but food, edibles, capsules and individual digestion can delay noticeable effects. Stay in the planned setting and avoid redosing.

Can a full stomach stop shrooms from working?

A large meal may delay or soften the come-up, but it is not a dependable off switch. Taking more because the onset is late can create an unexpectedly strong peak.

Why did shrooms work last time but not this time?

The batch, strain, measured amount, recent tolerance, food, storage, medication, mindset and surroundings may have changed. Even individual mushrooms from the same strain can vary.

Do SSRIs stop shrooms from working?

Some people taking SSRIs report weaker effects, while others report little change. Research remains limited and interactions are complex. Do not stop an SSRI on your own. Ask a qualified healthcare professional.

Can I take more shrooms if I feel nothing?

Early redosing is risky because the first amount may still be developing. The safer choice is to wait out the full session and review the possible reasons when sober.

Do old shrooms lose potency?

They can, especially when exposed to heat, light, air or moisture. Storage problems can also create contamination risk. Do not use a product with mould, condensation or an unusual odour.

Does body weight explain why I felt less than my friend?

Not by itself. Individual sensitivity, product potency, medications, tolerance, food and setting can all matter. Do not copy another person’s amount based on size.

Should I buy a stronger strain next time?

Not automatically. First determine whether timing, tolerance, label confusion, storage or medication better explains the weak session. A stronger strain can make a future mistake much less forgiving.

What should I do if an edible label is confusing?

Do not guess. Check the amount per piece, total package amount and serving instructions. Contact the seller before using it if the numbers still do not make sense.

When should I seek emergency help?

Call 911 for severe chest pain, trouble breathing, seizure, loss of consciousness, extreme agitation, dangerous behaviour or any situation in which the person cannot be kept safe. Tell responders honestly what was taken.
